Finding Your Purpose Through Surrender
Throughout my many years as an intuitive guide and mentor, I’ve received this question more times than I can count: “What is my true purpose in this life? And how can I find it?”
For many, this question arises when they contemplate starting their own business so they can leave the corporate world. And sometimes, we may find ourselves at a similar crossroads again even after many years of being on the entrepreneurial journey.
If you’re reading this, you may currently be feeling a sense of being called to something new—something beyond what you’ve allowed yourself to explore so far. You may be longing for a deeper sense of meaning and fulfillment in your career and life. Yet you’re not yet seeing clearly what exactly that might look like, and you’re wondering what steps to take next to find out what your next chapter in life holds for you.
If this sounds like you, this article is for you! Keep reading to hear my best tips on how to find your purpose, based on what I’ve witnessed on my own as well as my clients’ journeys.
3 Questions to Help You Discover Your Purpose
I want to begin by saying that finding your purpose won’t necessarily be a one-and-done deal. I’ve seen many people get stuck trying to figure out that “one thing” they’re meant to do for the rest of their lives. But that’s not usually how it works. As you move forward on your life’s journey, you’ll always keep evolving, and so will your calling.
However, if you’re currently in a situation where you need to make a decision about your direction in your career or business, the following questions can give you some clues to get you started.
1. What are you passionate about?
Your life’s work will always be something that brings you joy and fulfillment. And even more than that, a great sense of enthusiasm for what you’re doing.
What are some things you LOVE doing more than anything else? What could you do with immense excitement every single day? What 100% lights up your heart and soul?
Whatever brings you that kind of joy is always a sign that you’re on the right track. On a more practical level, choosing a path you can follow with delight and passion is important because it is what will give you the fuel to keep going.
Deciding on a direction that simply “makes sense” logically or that promises to be lucrative will typically not be sustainable in the long run because it’ll be easy to quit when things get tough—or you may never even stick to it long enough to succeed.
2. What are your greatest skills and talents?
Next, your purpose will usually be something that’s unique to you in terms of your skills and expertise. Something that only you can do in this exact way and that enables you to serve others in a way no one else can. Something that comes naturally to you and that you can do with ease. (Sometimes it might even seem “too easy,” but trust me—what flows effortlessly for you might be exactly what someone else needs a ton of support with.)
What are some special gifts and talents that you came into this world with? What have you learned and mastered through your experience in this life, whether in your career, studies, or on your personal journey?
If you’re a healer, guide, coach, or other service provider with a calling to help others on their journeys, your purpose will likely be connected to an important transformation you’ve been through in your own life.
What wisdom and tools are you feeling called to share with others to make a difference in their lives?
3. What is there a demand for in the market?
I will say right away that I don’t want you to overthink this question! While it’s always important in business to consider what others are willing to pay you for, it’s ALSO something that comes naturally when you’re living your purpose.
You’ve come into this world with your very specific gifts and passions for a reason. You are here to make a difference in your very own unique way. And that means that life must 100% support you as you embrace your calling.
If this area seems challenging for you, the #1 thing I recommend is asking how you can shift your mindset around the value of what you’re offering as well as any fears you may have around being visible as your most authentic self.
You may also want to take a look at your Human Design chart to make sure you’re applying your strategy correctly and making decisions based on your inner authority.
Whatever isn’t aligned in a more practical sense will tend to fall into place naturally as a result.
Finding Your Purpose as a Soul-Led Journey of Surrender
If you’re a little bit further along on your entrepreneurial journey and feeling the need to pivot, you’ll likely find that things may not be quite as straightforward as I’ve outlined above. (And this may even be true if you’re just getting started.)
Ultimately, living our purpose isn’t something we can ever really “figure out” mentally. It’s a journey guided by our soul—one that might not always make sense. Which can feel frustrating at times, but also: The good news is that there’s no way we can miss our path if we listen and follow those (often very persistent) intuitive nudges we’re given.
When I look back at my 14 years of entrepreneurship, I see a very clear pattern:
Every single time, evolving into my next level was a journey of surrender!
When I first got started on my entrepreneurial journey, I took what I knew from corporate and turned that into my own business because it flowed naturally and made sense. I quickly built a successful copywriting business writing web content for big brands and advertising agencies.
However, about a year later, I hit a massive wall of internal resistance. Even though on the outside I had everything I believed I wanted when I made the decision to start my own business, I felt as though I was dying on the inside. It was so painful I knew I couldn’t keep doing what I was doing.
Initially, I thought that perhaps I just wanted more time freedom and began to explore ways of creating more passive income. Which, by total surprise, opened up an entirely new direction for me. One that I had seen in my future many times before, but that I had never felt prepared for. All of a sudden I knew: The time was now!
Soon, I was working with the angelic realms and doing intuitive readings on a daily basis, started my first YouTube channel, and within less than a year, I was travelling the world with all my belongings in a suitcase and carry-on. This was the beginning of my journey as a spiritual guide and teacher and an entirely new life.
The same thing happened when I took the leap into my publishing business in 2019. I had felt the need to make some changes in my business for quite some time—but had resisted acting on those inner nudges until I was so close to running out of savings that I literally had no other choice but to listen! (Read the whole story here—I shared it on my blog last week.) It was the best decision ever. I waited until the very last moment, but I was guided all along, and life made sure I couldn’t miss what was meant for me!
More recently, I’ve witnessed a similar process once again. This time, I’m not totally changing directions, but even though I love supporting my clients with my publishing services, I’ve felt that same longing for a while now. That voice inside of me that’s been telling me I’m here for more. I have gifts to share that have been quietly waiting for the right time to emerge—and for me to come out of hiding and embrace my path as a guide and teacher of my own magic once more.
I’m so excited to announce that after a long time of preparing behind the scenes, I’ve finally received the GO to put my signature program Manifest Your Dream Life out into the world—the culmination of 14+ years of deep transformation and consciously co-creating + living my best life.
